H.L. v. Matheson (1981)

In Brief

H. L. v. Matheson (1981): Court upholds parental notice provision in case of immature minor

The legislature of Utah passed a law requiring abortion doctors to give parents notice "if possible" before performing abortions on minor girls. A 15-year pregnant girl sought and was denied an abortion without her parents' knowledge. She filed suit, claiming the law violated her right to abortion.

The Supreme Court disagreed, concluding that, since the case involved an immature minor living at home and dependent on her parents, the Utah law served important state interests and did not violate the minor's constitutional rights.
